The Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed held their first annual canoe and kayak race on Sunday, August 15, sponsored by Sprague and Curtis Real Estate and the Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union. Known as "Spotter's Sprint," the race featured canoes and kayaks (both single and double) and even a gigantic old WAR CANOE! Entrants started at the YMCA Camp of Maine at the sound of the air horn, headed out in a fury of southwest white caps to round the southern end of Lower Sister Island, then headed north where they paddled beyond the tip of Upper Sister under the watchful eyes of CYC Commodore David Dennett and his wife Vivian. Then it was the finishing leg direct into a stiff wind back to the Y Camp.
After the race, an awards ceremony followed a nice hamburg, hot dog, and salad buffet that included some awesome "Camp Cookies." It was a nice lunch indeed excellently prepared by the Y staff, and all in all, a really nice way to spend a few hours on beautiful Lake Cobbossee.
The day was certainly a success. Put this one on your 2011 calendar!
Cam Dufour from the FCW captained the Otter ll as a safety boat following the racers around the course.

The war canoe crew? Man were they fast!
FCW has been selling raffle tickets all summer for the kayak in the background. Here the winning ticket is being drawn. Note Mom with camera!
What a great venue for this event! Thanks to Barry Costa and his crew at the Y Camp for hosting this great race.
