The Lake is Rising and the Ice is Coming!

Photo taken 12-17-2010 at 11:55 am.
For those who have expressed concern regarding the lake level during dam repair,
the lake is rising!  Check out comparisons by looking at the Lake Photos pages.

News from the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed

On October 12, 2010, many of the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed gathered at the home of Jeff Timms to honor Bob Moore who has left the Friends to take a position at Thomas College in Waterville.  We at the CYC will certainly miss Bob and appreciate and respect what he has accomplished through the years as Executive Director.  We wish Bob and his wife, Susan, much success and happiness in the years ahead!

At the same time, we also share a genuine "Welcome aboard" with Ken Smith who has taken over as only the second Executive Director of the FCW.  We at the CYC suspect that this dynamic organization remains in very cable hands.

Good luck Bob!  Good luck Ken!

And what a great gift from his friends at the Friends!
Thanks Bob!

Captain Hugh and Betty Stephens
Summer 2010

How nice it has been these past few weeks to be able to again visit with Hugh and Betty Stephens.  We are glad that they had the opportunity not only to get back up to their lakeside home for a time, but also the opportunity to take part in a number of CYC events.  Hugh, as most of you know is the most recent past Commodore of the CYC and current Keeper of the Light.  He even managed to get to the lighthouse during this visit to do some needed cleaning.  Click here to check our Lighthouse page. Thanks Hugh!

As well, another fantastic pizza party was held at the home of Bill and Evelyn Kieltyka and during that evening Hugh and Betty showed us how creative one can be with CYC merchandise, in this case, the burgee that was created in honor of the 100th birthday of the CYC.  Good for you folks!  It looks great.

Hopefully looking forward to seeing you more next year!

Sad News Received from CYC Member
Barry McCahill

"Frances Elliot McCahill Dies"

The Commodore of the CYC received the following email dated August 20, 2010 from Barry, one that pays tribute to his mom and leaves the reader with a further understanding of the history of our lake.  Thanks for sharing this with us Barry.

"Not sure if you are interested in obits for the newsletter, but my mom had a strong lifelong connection to and love for Lake Cobbossecontee.  As a child, she spent many summers on Belle Island (back at a time when doing that was a lot harder than today!) and until her death she was a walking encyclopedia about things on the lake.  Her grandparents were Briggs and Baileys who were among the original settlers in East Winthrop, and her relatives always owned Belle Island (her nieces and nephews, the Elliots still do along with the Farrs who were her cousins.)  She was the late Jack Elliot's (Belle Island) sister, first cousin to the Farrs (Belle Island), and my dad and mom were good friends with the late Herman Boas who is a CYC legend.  She and my dad owned a camp and spent summers on the west shore near Birchwood for many years."

This site has been created by the CYC and is brought to you courtesy of Clark Marine of Manchester, Maine.
