Island Park Raft-up, a Bit of History Revisited! Saturday August 20, 2011
At this particular Saturday CYC get-together, some 9 boats rafted up just off Island Park and the property of Ed and Sharon Balboni. Thanks to their gracious hospitality and the use of their power for the two hour event, we were able to listen to some fine ole music provided by our Vice Commodore, Bill Kieltyka. Thank you Bill for providing the sound system and downloaded iTunes!
For those who do not remember Island Park history, the Balboni property sits approximately at the location of the former dance pavilion that was on the island for many a decade. Created by the Augusta, Gardiner and Winthrop Street Railway Company (the trolley) in 1903, Island Park with its dance hall, an outdoor theater, beach, and small hotel all nestled under the pines, became a popular destination for tourists and local citizens as well. CYC, following the suggestion of member John Vautier, decided it would be fun to recreate some of the sounds that emanated from the island back in its heyday, thus music from the time period of the 30s through the 50s including the Island Park theme song, Moonlight Bay.
And a spirited "Welcome home" to former Commodore Hugh Stephens and his wife, Betty seen in the photo below. Glad you could make the party!!
By the way, Betty tells us that she and Hugh had an absolutely marvelous time at this CYC raft-up event. They enjoyed being on the Commodore's party barge along with Amos the boat-dog, and had a fine time conversing with the CYC members at the party. Great weather, food, and friends!
Having been here only a few days, it is interesting to note that Betty was called upon to judge art at the ever popular Union Fair! She and Hugh were there today and had another wonderful time. Be sure to ask her about the adorable , lovable goats that they visited. What a time!
Busy, busy, busy. Have a great week you two. Sure glad you made it here this summer!
John Stanek (in light blue above) and his wife, Marybeth Stanek (in white above) will host the CYC Boat-in next Saturday, August 27 at 5pm at their residence on the south shore of Horseshoe Island. Check the Events page (go to the Boat-in list) for complete directions on where to dock and/or where to park to take the CYC ferry.
