On July 16, 2005 our lighthouse on Ladies Delight Island, its severe list having been corrected in 2001 and its new top constructed in 2005, was formally dedicated by Hugh Stephens, Commodore of the Cobbosseecontee Yacht at the time, while a large crowd looked on from nearby boats of all sizes and shapes. Work done on the actual construction of our new lighthouse top was under the direction of Mark Newcomb, who designed and constructed the top working from an architect's sketches, with assistance from Kaplan Home Improvements.
The overall Project Engineer and Coordinator of Construction of our project was Captain Hugh Stephens, who remains active in the CYC as Keeper of the Light. To all of those involved, it is clearly recognized that this incredible restoration would never have taken place without Hugh's efforts. He worked long and tirelessly to coordinate not only the extensive fundraising necessary, but the overall construction process. We remain in his debt for this superb, historic contribution!
This new top, at least the third in the history of the lighthouse, is made of a marine grade aluminum. It is the same as aluminum used in shipbuilding and was indeed fabricated by welder, Mark Newcomb. He did a magnificent job as you can see. The aluminum is coated with a product used to coat the beds of trucks, and the entire structure is held down by stainless steel rods.
